Breaking the Mold – A Celebration of Self
Breaking the Mold: A Celebration of Self
Free Arts Minnesota and Mia
2015
Fifty teens and youth from three program sites participated in a eight-week cast metal workshop at their site to create their own sculpture. This work culminated in a group exhibition at Mia as part of their centennial celebration.
The artist-students explored how to express and celebrate self through playing, constructing, and sculpting with personal and found objects to create a cast metal sculpture. Each step of the process was done at their site for a hands-on experience with or witness to the entire process from start to finish.
These artworks represent a transformation – of materials and self – that honors identity, vision, new skills and hard work.
Thank you: Teens, youth and their communities, Free Arts Minnesota staff and volunteers, Mia, guest artist metal casters, and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
