The Sally Awards recognize and celebrate the impacts and accomplishments of artists, educators, volunteers, philanthropists, and leaders who strengthen and enrich the arts community of Minnesota. Recipients are selected each year by a committee based on nominations submitted by the arts community. This year, the spirit of community-driven recognition was enhanced by creating new awards with an independent artist and community involvement. I designed and created the awards and collected and cast imagery from previous recipients into the bases during a community workshop at the Ordway.
The concept was to incorporate the starburst seen in the last few Sally Awards as it represented raw creation of art and the shining luminance of using art as a means of expression, storytelling, and enlightenment.
I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to create these sculptures for this years Sally Award recipients and to honor and celebrate years of visionary work in the arts – gratitude to the individuals and groups that create accessible and inclusive arts experiences.
Thank you Tommy Sar/Coordinator of Community Programs, Jenea Rewertz-Targui/Manager of Community Programs and Access Initiatives, previous Sally Award participants, Sally Ordway Irvine and all who create and celebrate accessible and inclusive arts experiences.
